Sometimes it's good to write something simply to take up space. Dare I say, taking up space is especially important on Halloween. Happiest.

  1. I find that if you know the Globe Theater, you read Hamlet and Macbeth and you saw Shakespeare in Love at least twice you can answer any Trivial Pursuit question about Shakespeare correctly and everyone will like you better because of it. Please note that I recommend never listening to me about anything.

I'm going to some sort of Halloween party tonight. There'll be all sorts of acquaintances and people you say 'how's everything going' to when you don't mean it and don't even listen to the answer. I just decided I'm not going to say that to anyone ever again unless I really mean it. If anyone asks me how I'm doing, I'm going to say I'm horrible and see if anyone notices.

I think this may be the most uplifting remark of all times.

Uh, I don't know, I don't know. Um, it's a hard grape to grow, as you know. Right? It's uh, it's thin-skinned, temperamental, ripens early. It's, you know, it's not a survivor like Cabernet, which can just grow anywhere and uh, thrive even when it's neglected. No, Pinot needs constant care and attention. You know? And in fact it can only grow in these really specific, little, tucked away corners of the world. And, and only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it, really. Only somebody who really takes the time to understand Pinot's potential can then coax it into its fullest expression. Then, I mean, oh its flavors, they're just the most haunting and brilliant and thrilling and subtle and... ancient on the planet.

It's so close to Halloween. I can barely stand it. Here are a few dress up ideas to consider...

Dress up as a calculator, tape, lip balm, hat, envelope, plastic bag, water bottle, glasses, rubber band, baseball or couscous.

Coincidentally that list happens to represent everything on my desk right now.

Okay. Thanks.

Someone emailed Moosejaw yesterday from Esquire Magazine and said she loved the Daily Remark and wanted to interview me for a story. Needless to say, I got super excited and did an interview that lasted about twenty minutes. Well, my yogurt experiment turned out terrible. I checked it out the moment I got home last night and it was way too frozen... more like a popsicle than ice cream, and when I let it melt a little it looked too horrible to actually eat. So, today I'm working on putting my clothes in the oven to dry 'em instead of the dryer. That's not true but I couldn't think of anything else to say.

We've gotten an insane amount of positive feedback about the bug and ottoman remark from yesterday. Here are two quick comments...

I was super close to seeing the movie The Baader Meinhof Complex by myself last night. I actually went to the theater, parked, and while I was approaching the ticket window place thing I thought that I didn’t feel like seeing a movie by myself anymore so I turned around and came home. But, in a three minute span I went back and forth on the decision nine thousand times and really ended up dealing with some of my own most significant psychological issues. Why am I telling you all this... Simply to fill up space in all of our lives. Thanks so much for having me today.

Someone emailed this to me and said that I had posted it as a remark before and asked if I would post it again. I searched the entire remark file and found nothing, but I’m posting it again anyway. I can’t confirm whether any of it is true or not, but I can confirm that I’m using square bullet points for the first time ever. Okay. That’s all.

  • Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.

  • Both Presidents were shot in the head.

  • Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy.

  • Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln.

  • Both were assassinated by Southerners.

  • Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.

  • Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.

  • Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

  • John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839.

  • Both assassins were known by their three names.

  • Both names are composed of fifteen letters.

  • Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford.'

  • Kennedy was shot in a car called 'Lincoln' made by 'Ford.'

  • Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.

  • In Style Magazine once listed Moosejaw.com as the best site that no one knows about. I’m not sure if that’s a compliment but I’m certainly taking it that way. I feel the same way when people say I’m shorter than they thought I’d be.

  • Another time Allure Magazine listed Moosejaw as one of the best gear shops in the world.

  • And yet another time someone told me they thought I looked like Vince from Entourage.

  • I made up bullet point three but it would be nice if someone said that to me once.

  • Also, I’m not positive bullet point one is true but I think it is.

What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?
